Number 5: Canon Digital Ixus 980 IS
The gently curved Canon Digital Ixus 980 IS has many of the familiar hallmarks of Canon's Ixus range. An optical viewfinder is unusual for a compact, while the modicum of manual override allows for more creative shots. Startup time is good, and the massive pixel count offers bags of detail. The Canon can struggle with high-contrast settings and colours can be a little neutral, however.

Number 4: Fujifilm FinePix F200EXR
There may be some better digital cameras in this chart, but the Fujifilm FinePix F200EXR is a digital snapper for the masses. This versatile compact caters for both newcomers and experienced users by offering full manual control over such settings as shutter speed and aperture. Shake-reduction technology works well and colours are sharp and vivid. Lighting conditions present no problem.

Number 3: Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 (14-45mm)
Arguably the world's smallest and lightest interchangeable lens camera, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 (14-45mm) has no optical viewfinder but an impressively clear 3in LCD display is available for shot composition. It's difficult to get a firm grip on the Panasonic, but you can use it as a glorified point-and-shoot. A great option for those who want to switch lenses without the bulk of a digital SLR.

Number 2: Fujifilm FinePix F70 EXR
A 10Mp model with a 10x optical zoom, the Fujifilm FinePix F70 EXR packs a Super CCD EXR sensor that can be used in three different ways: shooting 10Mp Jpegs; capturing 5Mp snaps with increased dynamic range; and delivering high sensitivity but low noise. Shots can be taken at up to ISO 1,600 with surprisingly minimal amounts of noise. This is a very good camera at an affordable price.

Number 1: Canon PowerShot G11
The Canon PowerShot G11 is a fully featured camera that delivers excellent image quality. Its megapixel count may be lower than that of its predecessor, the G10, and the rear LCD screen is also smaller at 2.8in. However, the G11 is far more sensitive to light, with some strong ISO settings. The G11 feels substantial, and it offers much in the way of image quality. Overall, this is a very good deal indeed.
