Number 5: Billion BiPac 7402NX

An ADSL2+ router with a 3G option, the Billion BiPac 7402NX smashes the usual 8Mbps ceiling of standard phone-based broadband connections, unlocking speeds of up to 24Mbps (for downloads). You can attach a dongle so that 3G web access can kick in should the Wi-Fi connection go down. Solidly built, it's adorned with status LEDs and very straightforward to use.

Number 4: Linksys Wag160N

With its sweeping curves, tasteful two-tone finish and internal antennae, the Linksys Wag160N fits more comfortably into the home than the typical Wi-Fi router. The EasyLink Advisor software is very good and will get you up and running in no time. It lacks such features as multiple SSIDs, VoIP, dual-band Wi-Fi and 3G support, but there are still plenty of configuration options.

Number 3: AVM FritzBox Fon 7270

More than just a feature-packed router, the AVM FritzBox Fon 7270 adds a slew of VoIP functions that turn it into a fully featured telephony system capable of integrating your standard phoneline with internet-based calls, voicemail and fax. It supports dual-band Wi-Fi, which can cut down wireless congestion, and AVM's regular firmware updates mean extra features could appear later.

Number 2: Belkin N+ Modem Router

With its vertical standing position, Belkin's high-performance Modem Router can raise its twin antennae a few inches over those of competing models to overcome nearby obstructions. The column of indicator icons is easy to understand, and the package is quick to set up. The Belkin N+ Modem Router lacks some of the features of the FritzBox, but dual SSID helps atone. It's fast, too.

Number 1: DrayTek Vigor 2710Vn

A high-tech wolf in sheep's clothing, the DrayTek Vigor 2710Vn keeps most of its more advanced features out of sight. This sophisticated unit boasts an object-based firewall and a multi-purpose USB port - plug in a hard drive for NAS functionality, or a 3G dongle for a backup internet connection. The wireless is only 2.4GHz, but it compensates with its discrete SSID networks.
