Network World - Nothing like waiting till the last minute, but Apple has just announced the date of its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), an anticipated gathering of 1,000 Apple engineers and 5,000 Mac, iPhone and iPad developers to be held at Moscone West in San Francisco from June 7-11.

The WWDC is also seen as a likely venue for the debut of the next iPhone smartphone, dubbed by some iPhone 4G and the subject of the wild and bizarre "lost iPhone" case that's been unraveling over the past couple of weeks.

While Apple hasn't revealed the exact lineup of sessions, it has given a general description, breaking them down by Application Frameworks, Core OS, Developer Tools, Graphics and Media, and Internet & Web. It's clear that much focus will be put on the iPhone and iPad, with the Mac and Mac OS X taking perhaps a back seat (the Apple Design Awards will be limited to iPhone and iPad apps)

Sessions will focus on porting iPhone apps to the iPad and using the new iPhone OS 4.0, which Apple recently previewed, surprising some with its many business-friendly features.

Networking sessions will focus on "creating reliable, secure, high-performance solutions for mobile applications." Security sessions will focus on defending apps from malicious attacks

WWDC also features many hands-on labs.

No word on what role Apple CEO Steve Jobs will have at the event, which will cost about $1,600 to attend. Last year's event sold out, according to Apple.

Apple will maintain its reputation for secrecy at WWDC, where photography and recording is allowed at the keynote address but prohibited elsewhere without prior written consent due to the "Apple Confidential Information" to be disclosed.
