HP buys management company Stratavia

Stratavia will help bolster HP's cloud-management solutions

On Thursday Hewlett-Packard announced it acquired Stratavia, which specializes in tools for deploying, configuring and managing databases and middleware in an automated fashion.

Stratavia's products -- including the Data Palette platform, which is used to discover and track application and database configuration changes -- will be combined with HP's Business Service Automation portfolio, HP said.

Key advantages of Stratavia's tools are that they automate tasks and can be used in so-called hybrid environments, which host applications in a mixture of on-premise, off-premise, physical and cloud-based environments, according to HP. As more companies move part of their IT infrastructure into the cloud, the ability to handle both worlds will become more important. Also, as IT environments become more complex, organizations have to be able to automate big and small changes, HP said.

Stratavia's cloud know-how will help HP boost its Cloud Service Automation product, which helps companies with their cloud rollout and provides automation tools to manage cloud-based applications, according to HP.

Denver-based Stratavia is privately held, and HP is not disclosing how much it is paid for the company.
