When it comes to virtualization the benefits are huge, the options plentiful and the issues – particularly when it comes to security and management – profound. In an effort to bring some clarity to the virtualization landscape, Network World has conducted multiple virtualization tests, digging deep on the top products and identifying the key questions to consider.
In one test we pitted three Xen-based virtualization platforms — Citrix Systems', Novell's and Virtual Iron Software's — against each other and against the results of our test of VMware's ESX and Microsoft's Hyper-V. In another we looked at virtualization management tools from Microsoft, CA, Dynamic Ops and Insystek. Then we switched gears and tested desktop hypervisors from Parallels, VMware, Microsoft and Oracle/Sun, and moved on to the hot topic of virtual desktops, testing a total of nine products. Oh, and we also put the latest version of VMware's vSphere cloud operating system through its paces.
