Macworld.co.uk - Apple's original iPhone looks set to become 'obsolete' in June, meaning that Apple will no longer offer hardware service or spare parts for the device.
9To5Mac published alleged internal Apple documentation in a report on Tuesday, revealing that the first-generation iPhone, which was launched at Macworld in 2007, will enter "vintage" status in the US, and "obsolete" status in the rest of the world as of 11 June this year.
The original iPhone will be joined by several members of Apple's Mac line-up, which will also be officially classified as "vintage" or "obsolete" by the company as of 11 June 2013.
On its support website, Apple notes that, in the US, vintage products are those that have been discontinued for more than five years and less than seven years, and will therefore no longer be eligible for hardware service unless they were purchased in the state of California. Additionally, Apple highlights that owners of 'vintage' Macintosh products can obtain service or parts from Apple service providers in California, and owners of vintage iPod products, including the iPhone, can obtain service from Apple Retail Stores by contacting AppleCare.
Obsolete products are those that have been discontinued by Apple for more than seven years, and will not be supported by Apple at all.
Outside of the US, there is no distinction between vintage and obsolete products.
