The company continued to expand beyond its consumer product roots into the business and carrier markets. The company's strategy paid off in terms of growing revenue, though VocalTec continued to lose money.

The challenge ahead for VocalTec will come when conventional telecom equipment vendors like Lucent Technologies, Inc. and data network vendors like Cisco Systems, Inc. start to ship competing products.
