Coyote Point Systems and Digital Envoy are partnering to offer an appliance that integrates Internet traffic management and global geographic load balancing.

Coyote Point and Digital Envoy are joining a slew of companies in the Web acceleration market providing technology that combines traditionally separate feature sets. The primary reason that most network managers will look at these software and hardware technologies is that they can reduce the number of devices they have to support on their network and simplify management, upgrade, and integration issues.

The Coyote Point/Digital Envoy appliance, which the companies plan to make available by year-end, helps Web site managers distribute requests for content to the most available server - and route those requests to the closest location to improve response time.

Global load balancing is a complex task. It requires knowledge of both where a request is coming from and which edge server farm is best able to serve that request. Global load balancing also can help ensure that if one location goes down, another can take over, reducing the problem of site downtime that can cost a company online business.

Global load balancing and traffic management can also allow a company to tailor content based on the region where a request is coming from. For example, a company doing retail business may want to customize a site for customers in England, providing them with different products that those in the United States or Canada.

The combined appliance will integrate Digital Envoy's NetAcuity technology and Coyote Point's Envoy and Equalizer load-balancing products.
