There sure are a lot of vendors out there looking to speed things all the way to the last mile. One of them, Dulles, Va., OptiView Technologies, counts Microsoft and Excite among its customers and has a range of products aimed at speeding the Web experience and getting more out of your network's pipes.

OptiView's latest product is called TurboCache. TurboCache combines image optimization and text compression with caching. OptiView execs say the product, a transparent caching proxy, can speed page downloads by as much as 75%.

The product intelligently reduces the size of files before caching them. By that I mean it automatically determines how to optimize an image. A spokeswoman puts it this way: "Rather than deciding all images on a site should be 32-color, OptiView would automatically determine whether 32 is right for each picture - or if an image is even best suited in its current format. For example, changing an image from a GIF to a JPG might be the right answer," she says.

By optimizing content before it is cached, TurboCache increases network capacity, and also reduces the load on origin servers because it can cache more. TurboCache, which requires no client-side software, can be used to speed up your Web site for all users who access it, as well as reduce demand on your internal network pipes and give your employees a better end-user experience, OptiView execs say.

TurboCache is priced on a per-server basis and varies per implementation.
