Internet acceleration software maker XCache Technologies recently announced it is " too busy " making money by selling its XCache and XCompress software tools to continue writing press releases. So I thought I'd let readers know that XCompress 1.0, released in May, is available for free 30-day trials.
XCompress is a compression software add-on to XCache, the company's flagship caching tool that intercepts, evaluates and manages all incoming Web requests. If a requested page or page element is found in cache, XCache serves the cached version without any burden to the Web server.
XCompress can work stand-alone, without XCache installed, but the two products work together.
XCompress compresses outgoing text between the Web server and the client, and the company says this can improve page response times by a factor of three or more and drop the overall bandwidth used by two-thirds or more. The software also applies compression before SSL encryption to reduce CPU load and enhance SSL performance.
The software automatically detects browsers that cannot decompress and sends responses in standard HTTP. The software is protocol-independent as well, XCache says, and it will apply compression regardless of protocol.
XCompress runs on Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 and integrates with Microsoft Internet Information Server with MMC and COM interfaces. Pricing is set at $395 per production Web server. The free 30-day evaluation version can be downloaded from the company's Web site.
