The "Over 55" job market
By Frank Schoff Reader T.K. wrote to ask how the job market was looking for the "older"(over 55) individual. Based on the demand and growth in the technology fields, it is the strongest job market in years, there are opportunities for individuals at all stages of their careers. I believe this is an excellent time for the "older" worker, but there are some conditions. * Anyone considered for a technology opportunity must have current skills. Old skills don't sell. That's not age discrimination, it's a reality of a career in the technology disciplines. * Compensation is based on the supply and demand of a particular skill, not previous earnings. This is a good news/bad news advisory. Those who have a high demand/low supply skill may see substantial compensation growth. Those who have had high compensation but now have a skill with low demand cannot expect to match previous compensation levels. * The older workers should keep in mind that they will be competing with individuals half their age. That can be tough competition. Be sure you're in shape and ready to play the game by the rules of the 90's, not the 70's.
