IT professionals with security skills are collecting a big premium for that knowledge, according to Foote Partners' latest quarterly index on hot skills pay. The results show that workers who use security skills as part of their project assignments command an additional 18% of base pay.
Skills pay are bonuses that employers pay workers who possess high-value technical skills used on the job, or those who have earned certification for these skills. Based on interviews with 24,000 IT workers conducted in the first quarter of 2001, the report focuses on market pay for 121 tech skills and certifications. The index is expressed as a percent of base salary.
Here are some of the highlights:
* Routing, Gigabit Ethernet, Wireless Application Protocol, TCP/IP, IPX and Windows NT/2000 Server command top dollar; each has at least an 11% pay premium. Areas that are cooling down include SMTP at 2%, ATM at 4% and NetWare at 5%.
* Cisco's certifications are among the most sought-after. Cisco Certified Network Associates brought home an additional 13% in compensation last quarter, while Cisco Certified Internetwork Experts and Cisco Certified Network Professionals aren't far behind with 12% premiums.
* Project Management Professionals are hot with a 13% premium, and Certified Information Systems Auditors can add 10% to their base pay. And when it comes to network operating systems, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineers and Master Certified Novell Engineers command 9% premiums.
