Genband and BroadSoft have announced that they are working together again on a solution for service providers to migrate their traditional voice switching to VoIP.

The approach hinges on full support for legacy features while concurrently offering the new features of VoIP, bringing together media gateways from Genband and application servers from BroadSoft.

More specifically, the two companies have coupled BroadSoft's BroadWorks VoIP application platform with Genband G9 and G6 gateways and C3 Signaling Controller, as well as the S3 Session Border Controller (SBC). The combined solution is designed to offer affordable switch migration, yet also extends new features like fixed-mobile integration, hosted unified communications and Web 2.0 integration that can deliver new sources of revenue. According to the companies, when used to replace a TDM switch, the combined solution can support residential broadband, business connectivity (connecting legacy CPE to the PSTN over IP), hosted PBX services, and IP peering and transport.

Readers may recall that BroadSoft acquired Genband's M6 platform and Sylantro Systems last year, making BroadSoft the undisputed market leader supplying stand-alone VoIP application servers. David Bukovsky, vice president of products at BroadSoft, said of the latest arrangement, "The Genband / BroadSoft solution allows carriers to deliver carrier-grade legacy Class 4, Class 5 and voice over broadband services via a single system. Our combined solution enables carriers to reduce operational costs, but more importantly, gain a host of new services for the subscriber base."

Commenting on the partnership, Jeremy Duke, president and CEO of Synergy Research Group said, "While there has been much talk but little movement in TDM switch replacement, the strategic combination of these market-proven solutions should help move the market along because of the rich applications and return on investment it delivers."
