During his keynote address at ComNet2000, Novell CEO Eric Schmidt let slip that two new products will be coming from his company early this month.

The two new applications, called ZENworks for Servers and ZENworks for Networks, will extend the reach of directory-based management not only on NetWare networks, but also on those running any version of Novell Directory Services (NDS) eDirectory Corporate Edition (such as Windows NT 4 and Solaris).

In a preview of ZENworks for Networks, 3Com Corporation demonstrated its new Transcend policy management system interoperating with NDS eDirectory for user-based management applications. In addition to the user-based policy management capabilities enabled by NDS eDirectory, 3Com believes its access control services will help enhance network security. Planned for a future release of the Transcend system, this capability will authenticate users before they are allowed access to their corporate network. The policy management system will examine each user profile stored in the directory and allow access to network resources based on predefined policies.

It's expected that ZENworks for Networks will also be able to control policies and access for any hardware (hubs, routers, switches, etc.) that follow the Directory Enabled Network specification, including products from Cisco, Nortel and Lucent.

We'll take a closer look at the two new ZENworks after the official announcement later this month.
