Microsoft has posted parts of the Windows 2000 Resource Kit on its Web site, and at least some of the content posted is relevant to a study of Active Directory.
Specifically, chapter 10, "Active Directory Diagnostics, Troubleshooting and Recovery" and chapter 6, "Active Directory Replication" are available for your free perusal or download.
Chapter 6 includes the subtopics:
- Active Directory replication model.
- Active Directory updates.
- Replication topology.
While chapter 10's subtopics are:
- Summary of Active Directory architecture.
- Diagnosing and troubleshooting Active Directory problems.
- Advanced troubleshooting.
- Disaster recovery.
This is an excellent resource to begin your understanding of Active Directory and how it might fit into your network. And don't overlook the Deployment Planning Guide - also part of the resource kit and available in its entirety online - which goes into great detail about planning for Active Directory.
Good, free resources for you - enjoy!
