Novell's new NDS eDirectory offering takes the well-established Novell Directory Service, removes the NetWare specific underpinnings, and moves it into the e-commerce arena where Novell hopes to capture the bulk of the "customer relationship" business.
NDS eDirectory is a multiplatform, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol-enabled, robust and scalable directory service. Running on NetWare, Windows NT, Solaris, Linux, TRU64 Unix and Windows 2000, eDirectory's primary use is as an Internet-based repository of customer and vendor information. Services such as the DigitalMe user-controlled identity system, InstantMe instant messaging system and e-mail services such as MyRealBox are all built on top of the eDirectory structure.
At the same time, eDirectory is the foundation of the enterprise networked-based security and authentication service we've come to expect NDS to be - more about this next issue.
Other services that integrate with eDirectory include Novell's new Certificate Server (for digital signatures and encryption) and Net Publisher (document collaboration and Web publishing).
Those of you responsible for Web sites and customer/vendor relationships will want to look at eDirectory more closely.
Those of you with more traditional network responsibilities should come back next week as we look at NDS Corporate Edition, which does change the way things work.
