The pool of IT job openings on Beyond.com is the highest of all industries, according to the online job portal's Career Trend Analysis for the third quarter of 2007.
The IT industry represents 12.87% of the online job postings on Beyond.com, and has remained the No. 1 sector for online job postings since the beginning of this year. Sales and sales management was second with 12.77% of jobs, and healthcare and medical was third with 10.50% of online postings.
Within the IT sector, the need for software developers and software engineers outnumbers the need for infrastructure staffers, such as network managers, by about 2.5-to-1. This is a reflection of a trend for organizations to hire software developers first and then begin hiring managers to oversee the development projects, followed by infrastructure folks to look after the engine, according to Rich Milgram, Beyond.com CEO. The number of positions for infrastructure personnel could eventually overtake that for software developers once employers ramp up their hiring needs in those departments, Milgram adds.
The highest percentage of IT job postings are asking for between five to 10 years experience (21.57%), followed by 10 to 15 years experience (14.57%), and 21-plus years (12.96%).
Geography-wise, Washington D.C., Connecticut and New Jersey are most in need of IT personnel, according to Milgram.
While the IT sector ranked the highest in terms of the number of online jobs posted, IT ranked as the fourth highest in the number of IT resumes posted by IT execs (8.00%). The top spot went to clerical and administrative personnel (15.71%), and the second highest spot is held by healthcare and medical experts (10.53%). Milgram said IT's position here reflects the fact that IT execs may not feel the need to post up their resumes because they are being approached by prospective employers in other ways.
Of the IT personnel who have their resumes posted, many of them offer between five and 10 years experience and work at director or vice-president level, said Milgram.
The top three states for resume postings by IT execs is Georgia, Connecticut, and D.C.
