The enterprise peer-to-peer networking market is set to sizzle, according to a recent study. The number of enterprise users who have access to a P2P network will top 6.2 million by 2007, compared to 61,410 users today.

According to a report entitled "P2P Networking Foreshadows Future of the Internet", by research company Frost & Sullivan, revenue in the enterprise P2P networking market should exceed $4.53 billion in 2007, a leap from this year's revenue figure of $42.8 million.

"An obstacle to an effective enterprise P2P network is convincing network administrators that a P2P network can be secured to prevent digital assets theft," Frost & Sullivan research analyst Jarad Carleton says. "This will require significant resources from market participants to devote to education on P2P security features as well as potential benefits that can be obtained by implementing an enterprise P2P network."

The report goes on to say that the interest of major companies, such as Sun, in the P2P space is lending credibility to P2P technology.

Frost & Sullivan also presented Groove Networks, NextPage and XDegrees with the research company's 2001 Marketing Engineering Awards for their contributions to the enterprise P2P networking industry.
