The Internet2 consortium, a group led by more than 190 universities, is generating some momentum into the analysis of P2P networks. The consortium recently launched a P2P working group as part of its End-to-End Performance Initiative - E2Epi. The initiative works in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications. It seeks to establish a performance measurement infrastructure across Internet2 affiliated campuses and labs.
The project includes analysis of the end-to-end path to determine network capabilities and restrictions. Among its goals is the creation of leading edge network capability for the national research community, the development of new Internet applications, and the rapid transfer of new network services and applications to the broad Internet community.
According to David Futey, associate director of academic computing at Stanford University, the working group resulted from a grassroots effort that led to a P2P workshop for Internet2 members this past January. The working group is notable in that it seeks to look beyond the resource management issues connected with P2P networks that have generated the most attention. According to Internet2, the working group with focus on "best practices, trends and collaboration efforts" seeded in the January 2002 P2P Workshop.
The working group plans to provide a forum for reporting recent occurrences and future trends in P2P and distributed computing. This sounds like a potentially useful clearinghouse to support collaborative projects in the higher education community together with corporate entities. It would be useful to provide best practices documents for resource management and innovative P2P applications.
