Sniffing for harassing corporate e-mail

Here are some tidbits that have been coming across my desk since Interop.

Content Technologies (formerly Integralis Technology) used to specialize in searching for viruses and other objectionable detritus in e-mail. You may not have heard of their product, MIMEsweeper, but it's a common OEM add-on to some of the firewall products out there. Now Content is capitalizing on the growing market in "fearware" -- software for companies that want to in some way enforce policies on harassment and defamation.

I suspect that the product may work better as a defense against negligence in the courtroom than it does in actually discovering harassing e-mail. But in any case, if you're willing to give Content Technologies your name, phone number, and address, they'll send you a copy of Michael Overly's book "e-policy: How to Develop Computer, E-mail, and Internet Guidelines to Protect Your Company and Its Assets." Jump to e-policy.us.mimesweeper.com/mimesweep.

Overly's book, released late last year, is getting good reviews from people I know who have read it. Since companies seem to have a hell of a time getting their security policies in shape, any help is welcome. You can also get the book from BUY.COM for 4 dollars: just do it before June 30 and refer to the BUY.COM $10 promo at www.buy.com/promo/8675309.asp.
