While Adero is teaming with nCipher to offer business users stronger security, along with improved Web site performance, Akamai is developing a new platform to deliver enhanced services to its customers.
Akamai recently announced its EdgeAdvantage service plan, which will be based on a pending Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) specification that's expected to bring new e-commerce and Internet telephony applications to users.
EdgeAdvantage will essentially be a service offering to Akamai's existing FreeFlow content distribution service customers.
Akamai and Network Appliance are working with multiple vendors to develop a standard method for distribution applications over the Internet with improved performance. The pending standard, Internet Content Adaptation Protocol, is backed by several vendors including Allaire, BroadVison, Exodus, Novell and Oracle, who are all part of the ICAP Forum.
The ICAP specification won't be finished until sometime in the first quarter of next year. Once all of the forum members agree on an initial draft of the specification, Akamai will roll out its first EdgeAdvantage offering, according to Kieran Taylor, senior product manager at Akamai.
Replicating content was the first phase of content distribution service offerings; now business users can expect enhanced offerings that will also improve their e-commerce services and maybe much more.
