It's been a rocky year for Cable & Wireless, from its customer service problems that started when it first took over MCI's Internet business to falling behind the service development curve.
But things may be turning around. Just a couple of months ago, the company rounded out its service offering with long-overdue virtual private network (VPN) and managed firewall services. And last week, Cable & Wireless officially closed the legacy MCI Pentagon City, Va., Web hosting site and moved its Web hosting customers to its new data center in Reston, Va.
Cable & Wireless' new Web-hosting site offers business users 9.6G bit/sec worth of bandwidth to the Internet and has more flexibility for future growth compared to the Pentagon City site.
This move sparks the company's push toward expanding its data centers around the world, which will total 11 within the next 12 months. The additional sites will be in Santa Clara, London, Frankfurt, Munich, Tokyo and Sydney. Through its parent company Cable & Wireless already has data centers in Hong Kong, Australia, Japan and the U.K.
Cable & Wireless already sports some large Web hosting customers such as Barnes & Noble, but expects that once it builds additional Web-hosting sites, more customers will jump on board.
