Project managers are key to your IT team and their importance is being reflected in increased salaries. According to IT job site Dice.com's 2007 salary report, companies are increasingly seeking project managers and these professionals' compensation grew accordingly.

IT salaries overall increased 1.7% to $74,750 in 2007, while project manager pay rose 5% to an average of $101,292. MIS managers are in high demand too, posting salary gains of 7.8% to $88,934. Senior IT management saw pay edge up 1.47% to an average of $107,830.

“While technology professionals experienced overall slower salary growth in 2007 than in 2006, the traditional technology hot beds of Silicon Valley, Boston and Atlanta saw better than average salary growth, and IT managers saw strong salary increases,” says Scot Melland, chairman, president and CEO of Dice Holdings. “Technology workers remain among the higher paid employees, especially those with management experience and hard-to-find skills.”

Particularly, hot skills being rewarded last year include Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) at $96,559, ERP at $95,589, and Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) at $95,387. Network skills such as VPNs brought in an average of $72,703.

The good news for IT leaders is that more than half of tech pros surveyed are satisfied with their salaries. A full 14% of respondents categorized themselves as “very satisfied,” while 39% said they are somewhat satisfied. Those 11% of workers who say they are “very dissatisfied” pull in significantly less than the norm, with average salaries of $51,560.
