For those who want to extend their metropolitan-area networks to greater distances, vendors recently introduced media converters that will drive Fast Ethernet connections up to 100 km.

Both Lancast and Transition Networks have released products that convert Fast Ethernet traffic running over copper wires so it runs over single-mode fiber optics. The Transition product can extend a network up to 80 km, and the Lancast product stretches to 100 km. Previous converters were limited to about 20 km.

The vendors offer their converters both as stand-alone boxes and as modules for a rack of media converters. The Lancast product starts at $3,099 and the 80-km version of the Transition product starts at $2,555.
