The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers earlier this month started up a standards development project aimed at fiber optic rings.
The designation is IEEE 802.17, putting the standards work within the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee, though it is primarily aimed at metropolitan-area networks. The idea is to create a new media access control layer for Resilient Packet Rings (RPR).
The working group will define an RPR access protocol and physical-layer interfaces for high-speed transmissions in a fiber-optic ring. It plans to address issues like bandwidth management, congestion control, and protection mechanisms for faults in fiber-optic lines.
The group plans a preliminary meeting in January.
