Foundry Networks and Extreme Networks continue to trumpet their wired/wireless LAN success stories, with Foundry saying its equipment has been selected for deployment at a university and Extreme giving information on an upcoming hospital deployment.
Foundry announced that Alabama A&M University will use its gear to provide both wired and wireless LAN infrastructure for the university's new campus network.
The university says it is moving toward convergence of voice, video and data in a network that will be the most advanced university network in the state. Students and faculty will get 100Mbps and Gigabit Ethernet connections, with Gigabit and 10 Gigabit uplinks leading to the network core.
The Foundry BigIron RX-8 will anchor the core of the network. The company says each BigIron RX-8 has a forwarding capacity of more than half a billion packets per second. The university will have redundant hardware and dual Gigabit and 10 Gigabit connections between buildings on its campus, supporting 4,000 simultaneous connections.
Foundry’s FastIron SuperX and FastIron Edge switches with Power over Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet capabilities will be used at the network edge to support VoIP services and streaming video.
Meanwhile, Foundry IronPoint hardware will create a wireless LAN throughout every building on campus.
Extreme announced that Hancock Regional Hospital in central Indiana chose the company's equipment for data and IP telephony services at its primary health care facility.
This network will feature Extreme's BlackDiamond 8810 switches, the Summit WM series switches and Altitude access points. The access points provide wireless connectivity throughout the hospital for doctors, staff and the public.
In addition to a main regional hospital, Hancock has remote sites that require connections to the main site. Plus, it recently expanded with a new hospital wing and professional building.
