Interop 2008 is happening this week, and Network World has the networking industry event covered from many different angles.

This year's Interop will also have security and software conferences running alongside it. In a nutshell, the organizers decided to expand the scope because they realize that networking doesn't exist in a vacuum, and that interoperability is an issue that cuts across various IT disciplines.

Though there is some gloom on the horizon - or maybe not - the industry is going into Interop with spirits high and products aplenty.

An early focus of the show appears to be wireless LAN technology, particularly around the IEEE 802.11n specification. Netgear has unveiled an 802.11n product line for small businesses. Broadcom is already looking ahead to the next generation of 802.11n silicon, with a chip that cuts power consumption and could result in lower prices for enterprise-level 11n gear. And in an advance for WLAN security, Array Networks is extending SSL protection from remote-access users to those coming in over WLAN connections.

Meanwhile, Network World has its usual exclusive early look at Interop Labs, the part of Interop that's really focused on testing interoperability and adherence to standards. This year's efforts center around network access control and unified communications, themes that reflect the expanded reach of the trade show into security and software.
