Firepad updates graphics platform

Firepad recently announced availability of its Mobile Application Platform 2.0 for the Palm OS. The platform allows enterprises to take more of their back-end applications, especially those with large graphics, and deliver them to Palm OS devices.

Firepad has been known as providing graphics and video to Palm OS devices. In fact, the FireViewer application should be a must-have application on your PDA.

The new platform includes the latest version of FirePublisher Server and the FireViewer Client Suite. The client suite includes the viewer and a desktop FireConverter, which moves data swiftly between the desktop and your PDA via HotSync. In fact, the Fire Converter program will let you move pictures directly from a Web browser (such as Internet Explorer) into your PDA at the next HotSync. I haven't seen an easier way to get pictures from the Web into a PDA.

According to Firepad, new and enhanced features in the Mobile Application Platform include:

* Support for signature capture and data capture with integration to back-end systems.

* Integrated support for applications, documents, HTML and rich media.

* Support for high-definition images, large-scale graphics and streaming video. This provides access to things like blueprints, manuals, schematics, maps, diagrams, training clips and so on.

* New Secure Sockets Layer support for security. Firepad can also deploy through Port 80 of the firewall to match the security of the existing network.

* Increased control over layout and formatting. This equips the designer to create mobile applications and documents that adhere to specific formatting and layout expectations.

* Supports any network, including 802.11b, Bluetooth, 2.5G and 3G.

* Customizable components, including an available client API. This lets system integrators and other developers embed the FireViewer Client capability into their own applications.

The Mobile Application Platform costs $3,000 for a 10-user license. The initial purchase includes 1-year support and upgrades. Firepad officials said they will likely be porting this platform to an additional OS (they wouldn't confirm Pocket PC, but it's likely) later this year.

If you'd like to check out the new client software (and FireConverter), head to www.firepad.com

You can try a demo version of the software, or pay $29.95 for the full version, which lets you make FireViewer videos and images.
