If you're looking to go beyond the basic handwriting recognition on your Windows Mobile device, you might want to check out the CalliGrapher application from PhatWare.
The company last week announced Version 8.0 of the handwriting recognition application. The software now supports Windows Mobile 5.0 devices, includes a new software input panel it calls Write Pad, and has an application called Statistical Analyzer that the company says will improve the overall handwriting recognition quality.
The CalliGrapher application analyzes pen strokes written in any application window or the new Write Pad area, a specified area at the bottom of the screen where users can enter handwritten information that gets converted to digital text, PhatWare says.
The Statistical Analyzer can learn from the user's writing habits by collecting data from the words that the user writes over time, the company added. After enough data is collected, the application can automatically fix recognition errors based on the user's handwriting patterns.
The software also lets users switch between four different recognition modes, including mixed cursive and print, uppercase characters only, numbers only and Internet access, PhatWare says. The software's RiteCalc feature lets users handwrite math formulas and then calculate the answer. Other features include improved graphics, the ability to import and export a user dictionary, and support for landscape screen layout and full-VGA devices (click here for a list of the new features). Language packs for 11 foreign languages, as well as a 130,000-word medical dictionary (Medical Pack) are also available for the CalliGrapher application.
The software will support devices running Windows Mobile 2003 or later, and costs $39.95 through the PhatWare Web site. Owners of previous versions can upgrade to the new version for $24.95.
