There's breaking news on the NetWare utilities front! Well, "breaking" in that it's recent - not something that happened a few years ago but of which I only just became aware. Our old friends at AdRem Software have released a new version of their Free Remote Console (FreeCon) for NetWare http://www.adremsoft.com/freecon/index.php.

The latest release, Version 5, supports Open Enterprise Server. Woohoo!! But - and this will hearten NetWare diehards - only the NetWare kernel. Well, to be fair, even Novell doesn't have an RConsole for the SuSE kernel. But still, a new version of a tried-and-true utility just for NetWare. That really is good news.
Mostly the new version is to bring compatibility with OES, but also added in 5.0 are the ability to use SLP for server discovery
and integration with Server Manager 5.x. Also, a few minor bugs from previous builds have been fixed.
But the key features that have made FreeCon a "must-have" for all these years still remain:
* eDirectory-enabled remote access to the NetWare server console.
* Fast operation in LANs and WANs.
* Support for TCP/IP, IPX and VPN.
* Efficiency in LAN and WAN environments.
* Proprietary single sign-on technology.
* Ease of use.
* Support for many versions of NetWare, including 3.2, 4.x, 5.x, 6.x and OES.
* Efficient use of Windows workstation resources.
* No need for server-side installation.
While Freecon doesn't have all the bells-and-whistles of its big brother, the full featured sfConsole, it is used by more than 40,000 NetWare administrators worldwide as a faster alternative to Novell's own RConsole. It enables remote and local operation on NetWare servers and provides NDS/eDirectory authentication. Freecon is easy to use, works with IPX and TCP/IP, offers quick one-step installation, and (unlike the DOS-based RConsole), it does not overload Windows resources. And, while it's more secure than RConsole, those needing the tightest security for remote access should think about purchasing sfConsole.
