While Novell didn't have anything to say about NetWare at last week's LinuxWorld Conference there were a few other companies that mentioned the venerable network operating system.

In a battle between AT&T and Verizon Wireless that never seems to end, AT&T's partner Apple now appears to be getting into the mix with two retaliatory iPhone TV ad that air Monday night. The ads comes hot on the heels of AT&T's TV ad campaign that aimed to "setting the record straight" around Verizon's "there's a map for that" campaign.

A relatively new start-up (just down the street from my office in Sunnyvale, Calif.) is Zmanda, which hopes to become a leader in enterprise backup and recovery with open source products. At LinuxWorld it announced that its Zmanda Network and Zmanda Enterprise Edition backup and recovery software for Linux, Unix, Windows, Macintosh would also support - oh yes! - NetWare networks. You should note that Zmanda's execs have strong backgrounds in the archive and backup space - CEO and co-founder Chander Kant was formerly with Veritas Software, while Vice President of Product Management Dmitri Joukovski was formerly product manager for Legato's NetWorker product.
Alexander LAN was understandably mostly touting its Alexander SMK (System Management Kit) for Windows and Linux, but it also took the opportunity to remind showgoers that it has Alexander SPK (System Protection Kit) for Windows and NetWare. The product prevents, recovers, diagnoses, and reports the cause of system crashes (i.e., "Blue Screen Of Death" and/or abends). These folks have been a friend of NetWare for a long time. Now would be a good time to check out Alexander SPK if you haven't done so before.
The week before LinuxWorld, but also in San Francisco (so I can claim it's related), VMware made an announcement that included NetWare. At the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference, VMware gave a first look at a product that won't even go into beta test until late this year. But it will run on a Macintosh and let users run any x86 operating system on Mac OS X and share data between virtual machines and tab back and forth between applications on the fly, without the need to reboot. In addition, any virtual machine created with any of VMware's products will run on Intel-based Macs. And non-Mac OS X virtual machines created with the Mac virtualization technology will run on other VMware virtualization platforms. It sounds convoluted, but (for us, at least) the most interesting part is that VMware announced specifically that Windows, Linux, Solaris and, of course NetWare would be supported running virtualized on Mac OS X. I don't know that I'd buy a Mac just to run NetWare - but if you're interested you can still sign up to be part of the beta test. NetWare and Linux, both running - at the same time - on a Mac OS X platform. Sounds like Bill Gates' worst nightmare!
