Network administrators are very familiar with the "not enough" syndrome - there's not enough time, people and/or money to do everything you want - or need - to do. One place that's especially true is in your test lab. This usually consists of which computers are no longer needed in the production network coupled with whatever mismatched peripherals can be scrounged up. Managers of heterogeneous networks can feel especially pinched when they need to test various operating systems (and applications for them) in different configurations.
A new product from Timpanogas Research Group will offer some respite to those of you supporting both NT and NetWare systems. FENRIS Installable File System for Windows NT (and Windows 2000) Server is the world's first instantiation of a Symmetrical Multi-processing (SMP) implementation of Novell's NetWare file system hosted on the Windows NT platform.
FENRIS supports all of the features of Novell's existing file systems including volumes and partitions, dynamic hot fix data redirection, mirroring and partition fault tolerance, multi-segment volume striping, namespace support, sub-allocation and file. Additionally, FENRIS provides the FENRIS namespace for NetWare, an on-disk B++ tree that allows on-demand rapid mounting of NetWare volumes within Windows NT.
Network administrators can now alternately mount NetWare and Windows NT on a server without risk of corrupting their data. This flexibility allows greater freedom for running benchmark tests within private environments and optimizing network operating system choices for specific servers within mixed NetWare and Windows NT environments.
FENRIS will be released in the second quarter of 1999 and will be available for download over the Internet. Watch for this time and money saving addition to your testing toolbox.
