I've been accused of being a bit of a nag about planning, especially when I'm talking about an upgrade to a network operating system. But trying to move from Windows NT 4 networking to Windows 2000 without a thoroughly worked out (and tested) plan is like connecting to the Internet without a firewall - it's possible nothing bad will happen, but the odds are against it.
This time, I'll repeat the warning that planning is definitely needed, then I'll tell you about a free resource that can help.
YOU NEED A PLAN BEFORE YOU UPGRADE TO WIN 2000!
There, I've said it again.
Microsoft wants to help you plan. In previous newsletters (the Focus on Windows Networking and Focus on Directories newsletters), we've told you about free resources from Microsoft that will help. Now, there's a new one.
As part of its free online seminar series, Microsoft has just published "Designing the Active Directory Structure," led by program manager Stuart Kwan. In this 1-hour session, Kwan leads you step by step through what you need to do to meet the three basic requirements for a solid Active Directory implementation:
- Assess your environment.
- Create a directory structure plan.
- Create a migration plan.
Make time to view and listen to this seminar. It could be critically important to your Win 2000 deployment.
