As an NT server administrator, you know the importance of defragmenting the file system to keep performance at an optimal level. Unfortunately, most defragmenting utilities cannot operate on the system paging files (which are used to swap out memory pages as needed to so-called "virtual memory", sometimes referred to as disk space) or Registry files since they are constantly open in exclusive mode. Now there's a free utility that will do this for you. System Internals has released PageDefrag for Windows NT 4.0, a utility that defragments only the paging files and registry hives. It does require that the system be re-booted before the defragmentation can occur, since it must be done before the files are opened, but it's a small price to pay to significantly improve the performance of your NT system.
Download the free utility from the System Internals Web site and check the other utilities available for all of the 32-bit Windows operating systems.
