Even though we're fast approaching the dog days of summer (at least in the northern hemisphere), the rapid pace of software development these days dictates that there's no "slack time" in the release cycle. So today I've got two interesting updates to tell you about which could be part of your (as the TV folks say) "new fall schedule."
I'm always amazed at the mileage a vendor can get (or the punch they can pack in to) a seemingly simple, homely utility. Yet Ipswitch continues to surprise me with each new release of WS_FTP Pro. The latest, WS_FTP Professional 2007, has just hit the street and it's more feature packed than ever. A number of you may not even use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) much these days, if at all, as we seem to use HTTP to move all the bits across the Internet. But FTP is still a much more efficient way to move files and a is protocol you should learn more about if you have to transfer files frequently, over long distances and/or of considerable size. And if secure file transfer is important to you, than FTP is the only way to go - especially using WS_FTP Professional 2007.
New in this version:
* Best-in-class SHA-512 file integrity checking and 256-bit AES encryption - secures files during not only SSL/FTPS and SSH/SFTP but even HTTP/HTTPS transfers, with SSH transfers now up to twice as fast.
* Integration with desktop search technologies including Google search - find and instantly transfer files, sort, compress, zip, encrypt and send all with one mouse click. Search on file names or by data within file contents, search data range and file type. Transfer only new or updated files and choose the direction of the synchronization.
* Backup capabilities - schedule and compress backups to any location such as USB or DVD drives, network directories, server connections or Internet hosting service.
* Enhanced folder synchronization - have one folder mirror the contents of another folder. Synch to any location, virtually any device, drive or server. Define which files get transferred and how new or updated files are handled. Great tool for updating a Web site or sharing files on a server.
Not only is it a great tool for you to use, it's one you can safely share with your users. The new Citrix-enabled framework allows you to deploy and manage centralized implementation of WS_FTP across an organization. This gives your users the ability to automatically encrypt, compress and schedule backup data to any device, whether that is a remote server, DVD drive, or USB memory stick. Users can use the built-in scheduling, synchronization, scripting, desktop search and e-mail notification features to build data automation applications.
