Iomega rolls out Linux NAS appliances

Iomega extends its focus from Windows to Linux network-attached storage

Iomega this week unveiled a network-attached storage appliance for Linux networks. The company, which up until now has focused on Windows-based appliances for small and midsize businesses, is introducing the StorCenter Pro NAS 200rL Linux Server. The device is a rack-mounted appliance available in 1TB, 2TB and 3TB capacities.

The appliance features hot-swappable drives and RAID data protection. Further it supports Microsoft Active Directory Service for compatibility with Windows networks. The NAS 200rL also supports as many as four USB-connected printers and includes five client licenses of EMC’s Retrospect Express backup software.

It features a Gigabit Ethernet port for connection to the network and four Serial ATA-II drives that can be configured for RAID 0, 0+1, 5, or JBOD operation. Drives can be added to the array non-disruptively.

The NAS 200rL supports Windows, Mac OS X and Linux clients and supports the Network File System and Common Internet File System, as wells as the AppleTalk File Protocol, FTP and Windows NT file system.

The appliance, which is focused on file sharing, printing and backup, is expected to be available in April and starts at $1,700.

The company also announced a new removable drive for network backup. The Iomega REV 120BG Backup Drive is expected to be used by SMBs and remote workgroups. It is expected to be available in April as an external USB 2.0 drive and an internal Serial ATA model. A 120GB ATAPI (AT Attachment Packet Interface) interface model is expected to be available mid-year.
