Symantec this week unveiled a new version of its Veritas Storage Foundation Suite for Windows and high availability clustered server environments.
Veritas Storage Foundation for Windows is software for managing heterogeneous storage in Windows server environments. It consists of a set of tools that help customers manage data growth, maximize their hardware investments, provide data protection and adapt to changing business conditions.
Veritas Storage Foundation High Availability for Windows integrates with Veritas Cluster Server to protect data and applications over LAN, WAN and metropolitan-area networks. The software moves applications from one server to another in the event of a fault.
New to these versions of the software are support for Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Vista client, Exchange SP1, SharePoint Port Server 2007 and BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
In addition, Symantec enhanced Veritas Storage Foundation by adding a snapshot recovery capability to Microsoft Exchange recovery storage groups. It added support for EMC’s Symmetrix Remote Data Facility Star (SRDF/STAR), a three-site disaster recovery option. Symantec also added enhanced disaster recovery testing with new Veritas Cluster Server Fire Drill software, and the ability to shred volumes securely. A feature called SmartMove has also been added that enables array or volume migration and support for thin provisioning.
Further, Symantec has added a configuration checker that compares changes to hardware and software compatibility lists pre- and post-installation to reduce errors. New wizards are also available that simplify clustering set-up and multi-site disaster recovery setup. (Compare Data Backup and Replication products)
And, finally, Veritas Storage Foundation now supports storage arrays from 3PAR, IBM, Hitachi Data Systems and Pillar Data Systems.
