A new storage company has appeared on the scene with tape and e-mail appliances for small and midsize businesses. PivotStor, which launched in 2007, offers tape automation and e-mail management appliances exclusively through the channel. Its PivotStor AP-Series Tape Automation products use a 'Smart' architecture that consists of robotics that use light to position accurately within the magazine cartridge slot and a dual armed carrier technology that secures cartridges during load and fetch operations. In addition, PivotStor technology consists of motor-driven gear that precisely aligns robotic tracking and positioning.

The AP-Series supports LTO-3 and LTO-4 technology, as well as Fibre Channel, Serial Attached SCSI, Utra320SCSI and iSCSI.

The EP-Series is an e-mail management appliance that is managed from a single administrative console. It features archiving, antispam, antivirus, encryption and digital signatures in the same appliance. Based on industry standard server hardware, the EP-Series is available in several models: the EP-50, EP-1000, EP-2500 and EP-2500+. Each model is distinguished from the other by several characteristics.

The EP-50 is a book-sized appliance with an Intel processor, two 1GB Ethernet interfaces and 160GB of disk space. It can hold up to 100 mailboxes and supports as many as 50 antivirus licenses. The EP-1000 is available in a 1U rack configuration with two 1GB Ethernet or optional 10Gb Ethernet or Fibre Channel adapters. It has three 500GB disk drives and supports as many as 1,000 mailboxes and 1,000 antivirus licenses.

The EP-2500 is also available in a 1U rack configuration and has three 750GB drives. It supports as many as 2,500 mailboxes and 2,500 antivirus licenses. The EP-2500+ is a 2U rack-mount appliance with 6TB of capacity and double the amount of RAM of the EP-2500.

All appliances support Exchange, Lotus Notes, LDAP, SMTP and POP3 e-mail systems.

PivotStor’s decision to sell its products exclusively through the channel is smart because of the SMB market’s propensity to buy products from resellers, who can install, configure and remotely manage the products. Among its resellers are Anacomp, Bell Micro, Hammer and Pro Mark Technologies.

The company competes with StorServer, Mimosa, Intradyn, Mirapoint, Ironport, Barracuda and Cryoserver.

The EP-Series appliances start at $1,250.
