Mimosa Systems this week is complementing its e-mail archiving software with a file archiving product for Windows networks that will attempt to meet the spiraling data retention needs.

Mimosa introduced NearPoint File System Archiving (FSA), a software package that lets storage administrators control storage costs, while managing the retention and discovery of file-oriented data. The FSA system includes a policy engine that allows storage administrators to set rules for the access to information, which users can modify, and where information is stored. They can set policies regarding the capture of information – those policies cause the software to crawl individual file shares, selecting files for archiving based on attributes defined in the policy.

Using single-instancing, files are de-duplicated if redundant and stub files are created for user access based on attributes such as age, last access, creation, etc.

Files that are captured are indexed and archived. End-users can still access the files independent of where they are stored.

FSA works with Windows 2003 and Mimosa NearPoint for Microsoft Exchange Server, as well as the NT file system. The software is priced at $24 per user per year for customers with over 2,000 users. It is expected to be available in June.
