Developments of the week in storage
CA this week made its yearly update to ARCserve Backup and XOsoft software, which includes more attention to virtualized environments.
CA ARCserve Backup r12.5 incorporates data deduplication. It runs on the ARCserve backup server and has an inline deduplication process. CA’s deduplication runs as a post-process to dedupe across the C drives of servers.
In addition, the deduplication process will dedupe virtual machine backups in Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer and VMware.
ARCserve Backup r12.5 has also been enhanced with a 1-step file recovery process for VMware vSPhere 4 and ESX environments as well as Hyper-V. This recovery takes an image level backup directly off the backup media.
Further, CA has integrated storage resource management capabilities into ARCserve that report on physical and virtual servers. An improved dashboard reporting process now includes the backup status for both virtual and physical machines.
The company has also added a CA technology called Media Assure, which gives the IT administrators the ability to verify the recoverability of backed up data.
XOsoft Replication and High Availability have also been enhanced with support for VMware vCenter Server and host-level replication for Microsoft Hyper-V. Add is also Windows Systems State Protection and Windows Registry Synchronization, which provide operating system protection and faster recovery. The company has also added replication for Unix and Linux environments, as well as SharePoint 2007.
Both products are available now.
