Developments of the week in storage
Data Domain this week announced enhancements to its Data Domain Replicator software. The company, which provides deduplication appliances to mid- and enterprise-size businesses, claims new software that supports a 90 to 1 remote site fanning in to a single controller. This capability allows enterprises the ability to set policies that span across topologies, while increasing scheduling and WAN resource throttling.
For instance a single DD690 enterprise appliance can now support 90 remote sites while deduplicating data. A fully configured DDX Array can support as many as 1,440 sites fanning in to one central site.
The Data Domain Replicator also supports replication mirroring. Implemented with a pair of Data Domain systems across a WAN, the system now mirrors all changes across the WAN after inline deduplication. This allows files to be instantly backed up. According to Data domain’s claims, the transfer of deduplicated data is at wire speed and can transfer as much as 21TB/hour. Data mirrored to the replica is instantly restorable and consistent with the source device.
Data Domain deduplication storage systems come in a wide range of models, differentiated from each other by the speed of deduplication. They support CIFS and NFS, virtual tape libraries and Symantec’s Veritas NetBackup OpenStorage (OST) interface. The Data Domain Replicator software is available now starting at $2,450.
