Dataram this week announced the XcelaSAN storage optimization appliance, which speeds the performance of applications by as much as 30 times. By introducing the appliance, Dataram officially enters the white-hot, already crowded solid state drive space.
How to save millions through storage optimization
The XcelaSAN complements existing storage systems by caching most active block-level data on solid-state storage. Designed for midsized organizations, the XcelaSAN can fit into existing storage infrastructures, where it replaces array or server-based solid state implementations.
This connects to a storage-area network using eight 4Gbps Fibre Channel ports and can connect to the storage switch fabric or directly to back-end storage. The appliance features hot-swappable drives, redundant power supplies, error correction, Intel's chip kill technology, internal mirrored flash drives and active-active SAN configurations.
Data is de-staged to flash memory after a power outage; when the power is restored, data is too automatically restored. The XcelaSAN operates at 450,000 IOPS, has 128GB of cache and 3GBps throughput.
Dataram's entry into the solid state market is not its first. The company originally shipped solid state drives called BULK CORE, which attached to MODCOMP minicomputers and emulated Data General and Digital disk drives. BULK CORE packaged eight 256KB modules into a single board.
The company claims it has many benefits over its competition. According to Dataram, the advantages are that its appliance can automatically identify and assign storage to faster drives, that its implementation does not require any changes to the host, storage system or application software and that on a cost per IOPS, Dataram's XcelaSAN is less expensive.
The system is managed through a Web-based browser for user-friendly operation. Pricing starts at $65,000.
