Avere Systems debuted an appliance this week called the FXT Series that automatically moves data between solid state and hard disk drives.

The FXT series sits between file servers and NAS appliances and the network, where it is able to move inactive data to the legacy NAS server to optimize performance and capacity utilization.

The FXT appliances consist of both solid state drives and traditional spinning hard disk drives. Reads, writes and metadata are allocated to the storage media using algorithms that monitor the frequency of access and the workload type.

The FXT is available in two configurations. The FXT 2300 has eight 146GB 15,000RPM Serial Attached SCSI drives for a total capacity of 3.6TB and as much as 29.2TB per cluster. The FXT 2500 has eight 450GB drives for 3.6TB capacity and up to 90TB of hard disk drives per cluster. Both appliances are 2U (3.5-inches) high and feature 64GB of DRAM and 1GB of NVRAM with a maximum of 1.6TB of DRAM per cluster. As many as 25 appliances can be included in the cluster. The appliances have redundant network ports, power and cooling and connect to the network with two 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports, two 1Gigabit Ethernet or 10 1G Ethernet ports. The FXT, which is available now, starts at $52,500.

Avere was founded in 2008 by ex-Spinnaker Networks executives such as Ron Bianchini, former CEO, and Michael Kazar, CTO, formerly of Spinnaker. (Spinnaker was acquired by NetApp for $300 million.) The company is funded for $15 million by Menlo Ventures and Norwest Ventures.
