In one of our recent issues we discussed a Java applications development tool. Well, here's another you should check out: BulletProof Corporation's JDesignerPro 3.0.

An area where JDesigner distinguishes itself from the competition is its support for Novell's NetWare Directory Services (NDS) as well as e-mail (SMTP/POP3) and paging.

As with similar products (such as JBuilder, Apptivity and CafePro), JDesignerPro sports a visual integrated development environment so that you can build Java-based applications using a drag & drop methodology. Database support includes both ODBC and JDBC.

The NDS support allows JDesigner applications to authenticate with NetWare as well as retrieve and set data in the NDS tree. As far as I am aware, JDesigner is the only tool of its type that has support for NDS.

The potential for using NetWare 5 as an application server is, I believe, huge and largely unexplored. Just think what kind of backend environment you could create for your Web servers leveraging NetWare 5 - high performance, extremely manageable, and completely Java compliant.

At present the BulletProof site doesn't have a lot to say about their NetWare support but if you want to try out the product, they offer an evaluation trail.
