Anybody remember Booklink Technologies? It's the last browser company America Online bought. One can only hope AOL's announced purchase of Netscape will be more memorable (then again, at $4 billion, how could it not be?).
Lost in the hullaballo, though, is Mozilla, the next-generation browser project that could do for browsers what Apache's done for Web servers.
Based on early Communicator 5.x code from Netscape, Mozilla will eventually consist of components developed by volunteers and companies around the world (many of whom use a versioning system to keep key components on track).
Mozilla will give Netscape fans something they can now only get with Internet Explorer - the ability to embed the browser into other applications. Plus, all those developers out there promise all sorts of innovations. Check out the early builds (some are released nightly) and other pieces below.
