As you read this, I'll be kicking off our Wireless LANs Technology Tour in Washington D.C. Our focus on this tour is on building and managing a well-integrated 802.11 network, a topic that seems to be hitting a nerve with you in the IT community.

We asked attendees when they register to send us some information about the projects they are working on to help us give direction to the speakers and address relevant concerns. As I sift through the responses, I'm noticing a distinct trend - WLANs are here and they are regarded as a viable technology, but security is still a big - no HUGE - issue.

All of the presenters have incorporated the security discussion into their presentations. Tom Henderson, moderator for the tour and principal researcher at ExtremeLabs explains what specs are in progress that address security, such as IEEE 802.1X, and what still needs to be done.

Henderson will also tackles how to prioritize security in your network and whether it should be an inhibitor to your rolling out WLANs in your enterprise. For instance, will you be sending customer information across the net? Are you in compliance with HIPAA regulations if you're using the technology in a medical or insurance environment? Also, what is the likelihood of data interception? If you're working in a manufacturing or warehouse facility, what are physical constraints you must consider?

Henderson is joined on-stage by representatives from Aruba Networks, BlueSocket, Funk Software and HP. All offer insight as to how their products can address your WLAN concerns. From wireless gateways to wireless bridging, you'll get the full range of how to construct a secure end-to-end wireless network.

We'll also discuss the changes to come in the world of WLANs, including emerging specs and the challenges of sending voice and video across a wireless connection. I'll be leading a question and answer session fueled by feedback from registered attendees.
