If you have the means, take an instructor-led course (1st choice) or an online prep course ,as like http://ciscoccna.net . The most important things to know well are the basics of routing and TCP/IP, switching and VLANs, and make sure you know your IP addressing/subnetting and ACLs well. Your Cisco CCNA http://ciscoccna.net certification is good for 3 years, and you renew it by retesting or by achieving a higher level certification,as like Cisco CCNA http://ciscoccna.net CCNP. The best books you can read to cover all of the fundamentals are the Cisco CCNA http://ciscoccna.net Press books, Cisco CCNA http://ciscoccna.net Self Study: either "Intro to Cisco" or "Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices".
