Mitchell Ashley talks with interesting people about interesting topics in the world of Microsoft.

Does a simple user name and password cut it in the world of cloud services, SaaS and Software+Services? This week’s podcast furthers the theme of utilizing cloud services for our applications, discussing how cloud identity management services offer richer options for managing user identities in applications that operate using services outside of the enterprise. (28:41)
Today, most online services rely on manual or background sync processes to update user names, passwords and account access control between multiple services, and between the enterprise and outside services. Kind of the digital equivalent of bearskins and stone knives in many respects. But most federated identity management services are designed for use within an enterprise, not between enterprises and online or cloud services. Eugenio Pace, Microsoft Platform Architect who specializes in architecting Software+Services applications using cloud services, joins the podcast to talk about Microsoft’s federated identity management cloud services, which is a part of BizTalk Labs services. The confusing aspects of BizTalk Labs is that it actually isn't built on the BizTalk Server we use today. Rather, the BizTalk Labs (workflow, identity management and application messaging) are built by the same organization but not on Microsoft's existing BizTalk product. BizTalk identity services, currently in beta, can work as an extension of Active Director through ADFS so web applications can use federated identity management services. You can learn more about BizTalk Identity Services here and read Eugenio Pace's blog here.
