Mitchell Ashley talks with interesting people about interesting topics in the world of Microsoft.

Jeff Kaplan, managing partner at THINKstrategies joins me to dive deep into what IT organizations are doing with SaaS. The economic challenges seem to have accelerated use of SaaS by IT groups, maturing SaaS to a point where it is much more palatable to IT. (27:45)
Attitudes have shifted about SaaS to the point where SaaS isn't always being brought in through the back door and IT is directly engaged in bringing SaaS into the organization. We even talk about SaaS delivered tools for IT like Rally Software, a company based out of Boulder, Colorado. Even Microsoft OCS unified communication project are now be offered by in a hosted SaaS offering. We also talk about the Software+Services, or hybrid SaaS model, and how that model makes sense in many situations. Saas doesn’t have to be all or nothing when it comes to living in the cloud. Jeff does cast some doubt on services like Google who have introduced cloud platforms that remain in perpetual beta form which could cast a dark shadow on the cloud and SaaS markets. My belief is that products delivered in the SaaS model must be highly reliable and of high quality or customers can easily move on to another hosted provider. The interview with Jeff was recorded before the Microsoft PDC so it's a kick to hear what we were thinking might be announced about Microsoft's cloud solutions.
