Carla Thompson and Keith Shaw discuss how the latest technology news affects the DEMO community of innovators, influencers and entrepreneurs.

Keith Shaw talks with Todd Miller, president and founder of DEMO 09 alumnus Gwabbit, about how the company that decided to charge $19.95 for its software has achieved profitability within six months, and whether this is the new (old) business model for technology startups. (16:57)

Gwabbit is not unique, and no reason to buy itBy Anonymous on September 7, 2009, 12:23 amThere is a product called Contact Capture from Broadlook Technologies (www.broadlook.com). It has been around for 5+ years and does what gwabbit does. It kills me when a company comes out with a product, and they basically did not do their market research. Contact Capture is free, is not limited to parsing one Contact at a time and rocks. I have been using it for 3+ years. Perhaps Broadlook does not do well in marketing Contact Capture, since it is free, I know it is not their main focus. I purchased some high end data mining software from Broadlook and my sales rep I talked to at Broadlook told me about Contact Capture as an after thought. When I saw Gwabbit, I checked it out and it has the about the same level of accuracy as eGrabber and Anagram (two more companies that do the contact information parsing)... both of which I have used and switched because they are not a fast or accurate as Contact Capture. Using Contact Capture, I can capture 100 contacts on a page in less than 1 second. Overkill? Probably, but having it there when I need it is sweet. Broadlook should start charging for it, or license it to gwabbit since they seem to be better at the marketing. I spend my day doing market research, so, sometimes I must rant about stuff. The question is, who needs to do better market research Gwabbit, Broadlook, or both?
Gwabbit has poor parsingBy Anonymous on November 22, 2009, 1:12 pmRecently looked at both products, Gwabbit and Contact Capture. If I use Gwabbit, I need to go back and fix the mistakes manually. Contact Capture rarely misses. I just wish Broadlook would add a button in Outlook, that would make Contact Capture a 10 out of 10 vs. a 9 out of 10.
I believe that gwabbit isBy Anonymous on September 8, 2009, 4:15 pmI believe that gwabbit is unique in that it does not require you to first highlight the contact information. It is completely automatic.
